National Day of Argentina

The movement for independence of Argentina was led by a group of revolutionary leaders. These leaders include José de San Martín as well as Manuel Belgrano. The most interesting person was José de San Martín was was born on 25th February 1778, in Yapeyú. This was part of the Spanish Empire. He returned to South America in 1812 from Spain to end colonisation on the continent. So he played key roles in the liberation of Argentina, Chile (National Day of Chile), and Peru (National Day of Peru). He lived out his last days in France. José de San Martín died on the 17th August 1850, at the age of 72.

Manuel Belgrano was born on the 2rd June 1770 in Buenos Aires. He also started the first newspaper in Argentina, the Correo de Comercio. He is also credited with creating the Argentine flag in 1812. Belgrano died on the 20th June 1820, at the age of 50.

On the 9th July 1816 a congress of Argentine declared the country independent from Spain. This started the process of moving Argentina to becoming a sovereign country. Today the country is one of the most vibrate countries in South America. The National Day of Argentina is a public holiday much like it is in other countries. Most business are closed on this day.
