Firstly the history behind the national day of Singapore is long and interesting. The country has been through a number of twists and turns in its history. This is only a brief historical overview of the country and its road to independence. The National Day of Singapore is celebrated on the 9th August. Finally this is to celebrate its independence from Malaysia on the 9th August 1965.

Firstly Singapore was founded as a British trading post in 1819. This was started by Stamford Raffles. Secondly the area was governed by the British colonial authorities until 1959. Thirdly Singapore grew and became an economic hub in the area. After this with Lee Kuan Yew becoming the first prime minister. Fourthly Singapore was granted self-government. At this point in time Singapore remained a part of the Federation of Malaysia. With different economic outlooks and political difference. Tensions rose between the two.
