National Day of Ukraine

national dayThe National Day of Ukraine is on the 24th August (Independence from the Soviet Union 1991). Ukraine independence came after the fall of the Berlin wall and the end to the Cold War. The anniversary of Ukraine’s declaration of independence from the Soviet Union on 24th August 1991.

There was Leonid Kravchuk who became the first president of independent Ukraine. He served in office from 1991 to 1994.  He played a role in the negotiating Ukraine’s independence from the Soviet Union. Likewise there was also Vyacheslav Chornovil who was a Ukrainian dissident and journalist who played a leading role in the Ukrainian independence movement. This was in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was also the founder of the People’s Movement of Ukraine. This which became one of the country’s largest political parties after independence.

Finally there was also Taras Shevchenko who is also seen as a Ukrainian national hero of Ukraine and cultural figure. He was a poet, writer, and artist who is often called the “father of Ukrainian literature.” His works helped to promote Ukrainian national identity and played a key role in the country’s cultural revival in the 19th century.

Likewise you can also see the National Day of Bulgaria as well as the National Day of Denmark and the National Day of Estonia.

Firstly here are the public holidays in Ukraine:

  • New Year’s Day – January 1st
  • Orthodox Christmas – January 7th
  • Women’s Day – March 8th
  • Orthodox Easter Monday – variable date (usually in April)
  • Labor Day – May 1st and 2nd
  • Victory Day – May 9th
  • Trinity Day – variable date (usually in June)
  • Constitution Day – June 28th
  • Independence Day – August 24th
  • Day of the Defender of Ukraine – October 14th
  • Christmas Day – December 25th (observed only by some religious groups)

Likewise note that Orthodox Christmas and Easter Monday are not observed as public holidays by all Ukrainians.
