National Day of Zimbabwe

The National Day of Zimbabwe is on the 18 April (Independence Day, declaration of independence from the United Kingdom 1980 (it had been unilaterally declared independent as Rhodesia already in 1965). The history of  the National Day of Zimbabwe is as follows. In 1953 Zimbabwe started as Southern Rhodesia and was part of a federation.

By 1959 the ANC was a banned organisation and Joshua Nkomo started ZAPU which was the Zimbabwe African Peoples Union. ZAPU was later banned by the government and majority rule was denied by the then  Ian Smith. By 1980 elections are held and Robert Mugabe becomes prime minister of ZANU-PF/ZAPU-PF coalition.  Relations with the then aparthied  South Africa was severed.
