National Day of Ireland

Firstly the story behind the day is that he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken to Ireland as a slave. He was 16 at this time and was held in captivity for a number of years. He then escaped and became a priest. The story is that he returned to Ireland to convert the pagan Irish to Christianity. It was him who has been credited with spreading Christianity throughout the country. The origins of the holiday is not exactly known. It is believed by some that it was a feast day in the 17th century to celebrate his death. It became a holiday in 1903.
