National Day of Hungary

The National Day of Hungary is celebrated on 20th August annually. This day is also known as St. Stephen’s Day, commemorating the first king of Hungary, St. Stephen.

He was crowned as the first King of Hungary in the year 1000, and his reign is remembered for its cultural and religious achievements. St. Stephen (in Hungarian, Szent István) was the first king of Hungary, ruling from 1000 to 1038.

Firstly Stephen was born in 969 as the son of Grand Prince Géza. Secondly, as he was a member of the Árpád dynasty, the ruling family of the Magyar tribes. Thirdly, Géza was a Christian and he ensured that his son received a Christian education. Finally Stephen became a devout Christian and was baptized around the age of ten.
