National Day of Kiribati

national dayThe National Day of Kiribati is on the 12 July (Independence from the United Kingdom in 1979). The day  celebrates the country’s independence from British colonial rule on the 12th July 1979. Kiribati is also known as the Republic of Kiribati in the Asia Pacific region.

Firstly as you are well of that the country of Kiribati used to be known as the Gilbert Islands. The country gained its independence from former British colonial rule. The independence process started in the late 1960s. Much like other colonial states the people demanded greater autonomy from their British colonial rulers. So in 1974 Kiribati was granted self-governance and the following year in 1975 they adopted their new constitution.

Firstly it took several years of negotiations with the British to finally achieve full independence on the 12th July. The day is celebrated annually as the National Day of Kiribati and is a public holiday throughout the country. The independence process was largely peaceful and was achieved through a series of negotiations. Finally between the British government, the Kiribati government, and the United Nations.
