National Day of Comoros

national dayThe National Day of Comoros is on the 6th July being its Independence from France in 1975. This is the day in 1975 when the Comoros Islands finally gained their independence from France. There are three main islands being the Grande Comore, Mohéli, and Anjouan islands.

Firstly there was a referendum which was held in December 1974. Secondly they voted for independence from France. This created the process for negotiations with France. The Comorian government and the French government to agree on the terms of independence. Finally the negotiations were concluded on June 30, 1975, and Comoros was officially granted independence on July 6, 1975.

Negotiations: Following the referendum, negotiations were held between representatives of the Comorian government and the French government to agree on the terms of independence. The formation of the government after independence was formed when Ahmed Abdallah was elected as the first president of the newly independent nation.

Some of the major public holidays celebrated in Comoros include:

  • Maulid – the 12th day of the Islamic month of Rabi’ al-awwal.
  • Labour Day – May 1st is observed as Labour Day in Comoros
  • Independence Day – Comoros gained independence from France on July 6th, 1975
  • Assumption Day – August 15th, which commemorates the ascension of the Virgin Mary into heaven.
  • Eid al-Fitr – This is the festival of breaking the fast, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
  • Eid al-Adha –  commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son.
