national dayThe National Day of Chad is on the 11 August which was its Independence from France in 1960. It commemorates the country’s independence from France on August 11th, 1960. National Day of Chad

Chad gained its independence from France (French National Day) on the 11th August 1960. The process of independence started in the late 1950s much like other African countries who were wanting independence from their European colonial powers. This both French and Spanish.

Likewise in 1947 it was the Chadian Progressive Party (PPT) who started advocating for self-determination, independence, and the unification of Chad’s various ethnic groups. So in 1958 the French government held a referendum in Chad in their African territories. They wanted to know if they wanted to remain part of France or not.

So on the 11th August 1960 Chad became an independent republic. The then leader of the PPT, François Tombalbaye became the first president.
