National Day of Central African Republic

Likewise in 1946 France granted autonomy to all of its colonies in Africa which included CAR. As you will know that this was the creation of the Central African Republic as a self-governing territory well within the French Union. However, real power remained in the hands of the French colonial administration, and the CAR remained economically dependent on France.

Then came 1958 when the French proposed a brand new constitution. This would allow French colonies to choose between becoming independent or remaining part of the French Union with increased autonomy. The people of the CAR voted overwhelmingly for independence, and on December 1st, 1958, the CAR became an independent country with David Dacko as its first president.
