The National Day of Australia is 26th January (Australia Day, date of the founding of Sydney, the first European settlement in Australia, 1788). It is also known as Australia Day. The arrival of the First Fleet of British ships at Port Jackson, New South Wales in 1788. This event is considered the start of European settlement in Australia.

The decision to choose the 26th January as the date for Australia Day. This was based on the historical significance of the day. Likewise it was on the 26th January 1788 that Captain Arthur Phillip, who at that time was the commander of the First Fleet of British ships. They had arrived at Port Jackson in New South Wales. Then proceeded to establish the first British settlement in Australia. This event marked the beginning of European colonization of the continent.
There are many Indigenous Australians as a day of mourning rather than celebration. This is because the arrival of the First Fleet marked the beginning of a violent and destructive period of colonization. This has resulted in the dispossession of Indigenous land and the forced removal of Indigenous children from their families. As a result, there have been calls to change the date of Australia Day to a day that is more inclusive and respectful of Indigenous Australians.
